The Christmas festival is getting more and more popular in Vietnam - a communist state where no one has ever expected to see such encouragement to a Christan festival. Nowadays, Vietnamese people start to encourage the Christmas festival because they can see the irreligious attraction and also commercial opportunities.

Thought Christmas festival in Vietnam is affected alot by Western culture, however, it it still somehow different.

Commercial festival.

Christmas festival is getting more and more popular in Vietnam.

Mrs Tran Thi Kim Oanh, a woman who sells Santa Claus outfits on the roadside, said " In recent years, I couldn't sell as much products as before. There are so many competitions! Before,  the companies and supermarkets didn’t sell Christmas products, however, now they can see the demand in the market, they start to sell those products too.”

Mr Rylan Higgins, an anthropocentrist from Saint Mary’s University in Canada who has lived in Vietnam for 9 years, said “Many companies in Vietnam has started their Christmas marketing compaigns very soon in recent years. They decorate the malls with fake snow, Christmas trees... and Christmas songs are played in every corner of the city. You know that Vietnamese people in middle class are expanding, they are willing to spend money. The companies know this so they try to exploit as much as they can through this occassion".

Christmas festival is time for friends.

Vietnamese people find no difficulties in excepting the influence of the companies because to most people, Christmas doesn't base on personal value. It is not an occasion to stay at home, have dinner with family and say thank you to each others. Instead, people prefer to go out with their friends, go shopping, taking pictures of the sparkling Christmas decorations at the malls, stores or companies.... especially on Christmas's Eve.

Mr Dinh Huu Thoai - a Catholic priest - said : "A special thing about Christmas festival in Vietnam is that the youth don't stay at home on Christmas' Eve, streets on that day are always very crowded. Unlike in the West, where people prefer to stay at home and spend time with their families."
