Mong Phu (Hanoi) – the traditional symbol of Vietnam village

There are many ways to enter Duong Lam village but the only ancient gate left of the village is Mong Phu. This is one of the most famous ancient village gates of Vietnam.

The village gate – where keeps the spirit of Doai village

According to Vietnam ancient architecture, a village gate was considered as the door of a house. That is why this architecture is like a signal to mark the outside with the atmosphere inside. Mong Phu village gate was built in 1553, Hau Le period, King Le Than Tong.

With Duong Lam people, the gate has been so familiar. This marks the life inside with the noisy life outside so that village gate plays a crucial role in the life of the local people in Duong Lam.

Like other traditional architectures, the way to choose the direction was affected by geomancy. Mong Phu village gate is the main gate of Duong Lam towards the Southeast direction. According to the seniors, the Southeast is a good direction because it is the direction of sun rising. And even on hot days, the climate is still cool with wind blowing.

Is the separate point with fields, the village gate welcomes farmers back to their home everyday. This is also the place where welcomes tourists, scholars and local people. The thought of building village and develop the village has been in every Doai people’s mind.

Mong Phu village gate is a construction in historical relics complex which combines well with village road, banyan tree, well, pond, bamboo rows and rice fields. Surrounding the gate is spacious atmosphere. Beside the gate is a 400-year-old banyan tree and faraway is green coconut trees. With people who just go far from the village, seeing the banyan tree from far away will make them feel nervous. And when they walk through the gate, the feeling of peace will fill them.

With ancient culture, Duong Lam people sculptured a distich on the gate. On the left side of the gate is a sentence which meant the year of building this gate (1553). On the right side is a sentence which meant: we need to develop the traditional culture and the spirit of the village. And the distich still remains the power nowadays.

One of special things of the gate is numbers. Whoever has come to Duong Lam would see number 3 and 11 on the gate: 11 rails, 3 feet, 3 iron splints, 3 latches, 3 dots. According to geomancy, 11 stands for energy and number 3 stands for forever life.

The gate has been a special cultural construction of Vietnam. Coming to Duong Lam, the simplicity of Mong Phu gate appear like a warm welcome for local people and also tourists. Half of a millennium has passed and Duong Lam still remains the ancientness and become the cultural beauty of Vietnam.
