Located in the Northwest of Vietnam, Sapa is a town in Lao Cai province. Sapa attracts tourists by beautiful nature and human.

Climate

Sapa’s climate is cool all year round. At the height of 1500m-1800m, the average temperature is about 15-18 Celsius. From May to August, it rains hard in Sapa and when winter comes, the temperature in Sapa may reach under 0 Celsius, sometimes with snow.

The best time to travel to Sapa

At the late August, early September is the best time to travel Sapa. It is the time of terraced fields. Or you can go after Tet holiday to enjoy Sapa peach blossom with many other types of flowers, green fields. Another choice is from February to May when the weather is cool in day and cold at night, very suitable for exploring Sapa.

In winter from December to February, it is very cold, especially at night but you can enjoy the best sunrise on the valley in early morning. If you are lucky, you can also see snow.

Traveling to Sapa

Sapa town is far from Lao Cai city 38km and Hanoi 376 km. You can travel to Sapa by train or coach.

From Hanoi

Public coach: the price ticket for a sleeping seat is from 230.000 to 280.000 VND/way. You can depart from My Dinh, Luong Yen or Gia Lam Station in 8-9 hours. The coach brands: Hai Van (0203.872.606), Hung Thanh (0989.294.294), VietBus (043-627.27.27). Each brand has so many daily coaches to Sapa, the earliest one is at 17 pm. The advantage of traveling by coach is that you can go straight ahead to Sapa without stopping. However, it will get hard in rainy season.

Hiring coach: if you go with group, you can hire a coach. There are many travel coaches services in Hanoi like: Thuexe.net (04-66808587), Tuan Linh travel (04-22168007)… Depending on each type of coach, the price is different (about 6.300.000 VND in 3 days).

Train: if you go by train, you can depart from Ha Noi train station at 120 Le Duan, Hoan Kiem with the price of 250.000 VND. Then from Lao Cai station, take a motorbike to go to Sapa with the price of 50.000-60.000 VND. Or you can take a bus with the price of 10.000 VND.

From Ho Chi Minh City

If you depart from Ho Chi Minh City, you can go to Hanoi then from Hanoi to Sapa.

To travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, you can go by train, coach or plane.

Train: depart from Saigon station at 01 Nguyen Thong, Ward 9, Dist.3. Phone number: 08.39 318 952. The price ticket: about 782.000/person.

Coach: you can choose Hoang Long (0988 259 568), Mai Linh (08 39292929), Tan Dat (08 2181056 – 090 66 88 567)… The price ticket: from 550.000 VND including meals.

Airplane: it is the most effective way to travel from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi with the price of about 1,2 million VND/ticket/person.

Means of transport in Sapa

Coming to Sapa, you can hire motorbike with the price of 120.000 VND/bike. You can hire in a day and return them at 18-20 pm.

The second way is that you can make a deal with a motorbike rider to take you to famous destinations. It is about 100.000 VND for 4-5 nearby destinations.

The third way is that you can join a tour of travel agency in Sapa. You can ask your hotel for more information.

Hotels in Sapa are diverse with high-quality services. The price is from 257.000 VND/night from 1 to 5 stars.

There are so many activities awaiting you: conquering Fansipan, visiting Bac Ha market, visiting China border gate, trekking to explore, going for a walk at night…

Food and drink

Breakfast: the noodle stall opposite to the town station, Hoang Ngan or Sapa market.

Lunch and dinner: Anh Dung restaurant (69 Xuan Vien Sapa – near the station), Silver Fall restaurant (Tue Tinh Ward) or Hoa Dao (033 Xuan Vien)…

Besides, Sapa also has so many grilled stalls with famous dishes: bamboo-tube rice, grilled dishes, wild apple wine, hot pot, salmon…

Note:

  • Remember to bring map with you because there are many passes on the way to Sapa.
  • You can ask your hotel about the train ticket (20.000 VND/ticket), Sapa tour.
  • Don’t wear high heels, you should wear sport shoes, convenient clothes and hat.
  • In summer, dress warmly at night.
  • If you are on backpacking trip, you should hire a tour guide because they have skills and experiences.
  • To save energy, you should hire a car on the way back.
  • On the way from Lao Cai to Sapa, you need to put cotton in your ears to avoid buzzing.
