Special festivals of Sapa’s ethnics

Coming to Sapa at the end of the year, you will have the chance to join in special festivals of the ethnics living here. Each festival is the culture symbol of each ethnic.

Special festivals of Sapa’s ethnics

In January to the lunar year every year, Giay people hold Roong Poc festival to pray for abundant harvest and peace. It originates in Ta Van village but nowadays, it has spread to Muong Hoa valley. Apart from rituals, there are many games and performances in the festival.

In June to the lunar year every year, H’mong, Dao and Giay ethnics gather together at the temple of Ta Van village to hold Nao Cong festival to pray for peace and abundant harvests. Besides, the head of the festival will declare the commitment and finish the festival in happiness.

Dancing festival is an important festival and well-prepared of Dao people in Ta Van. This festival is held on 1st and 2nd January to the lunar year. The main meaning of Dancing festival is peace and gratitude. The specialties of this festival are that the chosen men will dance 14 types and dance and unique rituals.

Nhan Song and Nao Song festival

 This is a festival of Dao people in Giang Ta Chai village to prevent the deforestation. Nowadays, only in the year when there are so many deforestations will they hold Nhan Song festival. In the festival, the head voted by all of the people declare the rules of deforestations and punishment. After discussing about this problem, the head will gather all information and make a list of rule and everyone has to comply with it.

Nao Song festival of H’mong in Seo Mi Ty village is the same as Nhan Song festival of Dao people except its range is larger. Apart from preventing deforestation, the festival is also held to pray for peace and harvest protection.

Village sweeping festival of Xa Pho ethnic

 Every  year, Xa Pho ethnic holds village sweeping festival in February to the lunar year to pray for peace and good harvests. In the festival, people bring their pigs, dogs, rice… to make food for worshiping, dance and draw on their faces. At the end of the festival, everyone gather to have meal with each other.

 Gau Tao is an important festival of H’mong people. This festival is held to pray for peace in career and life. If anyone doesn’t have a baby, he/she will pray for a baby. If someone has disease, he/she will pray for health. Gau Tao festival is often held in the first days of the year.

Xuong dong Sapa-Lao Cai festival

 Xuong dong Sapa-Lao Cai festival of Tay, Dao ethnic in Ban Ho village is started on the 8th January to the lunar year every year. This festival include the most unique dances of Tay and Dao people with interesting cultural games.
