Unique festivals in Japan

Japan has unique culture with many special festivals which attract a lot of visitors from all over the world.

Hanami festival

This is traditional festival in Japan. It is taken place from the end of March to the beginning of April. The festival is a chance for people to play, drink, and taking photos together, especially, they can contemplate the beauty of sakura – Japan national flower.

Shogatsu festival – New year festival

The festival is taken place in new year time with the aim to pray for lucky and good things. In Tet holidays, Japanese people decorate their house’s gate with bamboo and pine branch and that gate is called “kadomatsu”. They send the wishing card to their friend and relatives to wish them a happy new year also.

Tanabata is not a love festival, it is the anniversary - the day to pray for the best things to the people. In this festival, the street is well decorated with bamboo and praying amulets, people wear the traditional clothes. Besides, there are many entertaining activities on that day, such as performing traditional music and firework.

Different areas in Japan have the different Tanabana activities.

This festival was held on lunar 15th July but now it is taken place on 17th July or August, it’s up to each local. In Obon festival, people often wear the traditional clothes and perform the traditional dance on the street.

The festival is held to thank God and pray for a good crop. This unique festival is taken place in every Autumn with the taking part in of many people in the village.

Summer festival (Domatsuri)

Domatsuri is held to pray for a good health. People here parade by boat on the river with colorful dress. One of the biggest and most attractive summer festival in Japan is Nebuta festival held in August at Aomori.
